Weight loss
March 29, 2008 at 5:05 am | In Uncategorized | 1 CommentWell, here it is. I’ve lost 9.4 pounds. Quite a bit slower than I would like, but I remind myself it’s healthy this way and it will stay off if I lose it slower. I’m so close to that 10 pound mark I can taste it. I thought it was going to happen this week, but alas, I’ll have to wait another week. I know I can do it, though!
Herb update
March 27, 2008 at 6:42 pm | In Herbs | Leave a CommentWe officially have five seedlings of everything but the lavender. The parsley started sprouting this week, which is a huge relief, but there’s still one lonely lavender. I’m secretly rooting for that one because I love lavender and hope it turns out ok. Keep your fingers crossed.
The cilantro is still the clear leader. All the herbs grow daily, but the cilantro gets taller and taller. Is it bad that my mouth waters and I immediately think of salsa when I see it? Mmm…salsa. With homegrown tomatoes! Even better!
Peanut pride
March 27, 2008 at 6:36 pm | In Peanut | Leave a CommentWe took Peanut to the vet yesterday. I swelled with pride because she was so good and everyone raved over how cute and sweet she is. She just sat there while the vet did her thing and Peanut didn’t whine or try to get away. That’s my dog! She’s even gained the one pound they said she could stand to gain, so she’s in good shape.
And that little bald spot isn’t so bald anymore. The vet checked it out and it’s nothing. The vet was also impressed because she saw Peanut shake for a treat while we were waiting. My dog is smart.
Allergies and herbs
March 25, 2008 at 7:50 pm | In Herbs, Peanut | Leave a CommentLet me clarify: I’m not talking about allergies to the herbs. That would be tragic. I’m just talking about both topics in this post.
I think I have allergies because my throat is sore. I think Peanut also has allergies because she itches all the time. We noticed she has an ever so slight bald spot on her side that came out of nowhere. We think she’s been itching particularly hard there, so to the vet we’re going because I don’t want a hairless dog. Plus, she gets frustrated with the itching, so I feel bad for her. I really hope it’s just due to the season and not due to something like her food or something. I love Canidae, the food we’ve switched her to. It’s excellent, healthy, makes her coat shiny, and she loves it. I hope the vet doesn’t have us switch because I just plain believe in Canidae. Plus, I don’t want to have to deal with figuring out what she’s allergic to.
Peanut has also been getting the hiccups. Isn’t that weird? I didn’t really that could happen, but sure enough, she gets ‘em.
On the herb front, things are flourishing. Basil and cilantro are the clear leaders so far (five of the six plants for both have sprouted). The lavender is doing ok, although only one of my six plants have sprouted. The parsley is lagging behind. No sprouts yet. None. It’s rather sad. Those seeds were different; I soaked them overnight according to the seed package directions. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it, or if it’s due to Peanut’s paw. Maybe I should start over with the parsley…
What is the deal?
March 24, 2008 at 11:07 pm | In Uncategorized | 1 CommentI apologize if you are reading my blog and my pictures are HUGE. Seriously, it doesn’t look like that at home. When I check my blog elsewhere, though, the pictures take up way too much space. I’m trying to figure it out…
We had an excellent Easter. I made dinner and it was tasty. Junior even said it was the best Easter dinner he’s ever had. Not that I’m bragging or anything. Dessert–mint-chocolate bars–tasted just like a Fanny May mint meltaway. Yum!
In other news, I’m thinking of riding my bike to work. However, I fear the distance and the busy streets. Like many things, I’ll thoroughly think it through and analyze every possible situation before implementing a plan. Gas prices are just plain ridiculous, though, and bike riding will only do good things for my health. I’ll post if I do decide to go with it. I could get more use out of my purple helmet, so there’s incentive right there.
More sprouts
March 22, 2008 at 8:38 pm | In Herbs | 1 CommentIt’s only been one week, and I have several basil plants sprouting and one lavender. The cilantro and parsley haven’t peeked through yet, but I bet it won’t be long. This is so exciting! I look forward to every day so I can check in on my herbs.
Future herb container
March 22, 2008 at 8:30 am | In Gardening | Leave a CommentMy mom and stepdad sent us a fabulous bouquet of flowers for Easter. The best part is the arrangment came in a really cute Beatrix Potter themed watering can. I definitely see the potential to grow some herbs in that thing…
Happy Easter
March 22, 2008 at 8:17 am | In Cooking | 1 CommentI dyed Easter eggs this year. I had so much fun. They didn’t turn out quite as sophisticated as I had hoped, but come on. They’re Easter eggs. And yes, that is glitter you see. Except maybe you can’t see. The pictures didn’t turn out so great. The first picture is one of the two eggs I dyed especially for my husband. They’re orange and blue in true Illini pride.
I’m cooking Easter dinner, a la Cooking Light magazine style. I’ll make sugar-and-spice-crusted ham, broccoli-potato gratin, steamed veggies, a big green salad, and the cover dessert on the lastest Cooking Light issue: mint-chocolate bars. Yum!
Basil!
March 21, 2008 at 4:51 am | In Gardening | 1 CommentMy first basil plant has sprouted! Wahoo! Today has been the first sunny day all week, and I was delighted to come home and see the first ‘lil sprout. I can’t wait for more.
Me? Gardening?
March 19, 2008 at 12:46 am | In Gardening | 2 CommentsI want to grow a garden! In a really, really bad way. It’s all I can think about. I want a huge variety of vegetables and herbs, and I want it now. The sad thing is, I can’t have that now. I’ve decided I’m going to settle for container gardening. I’ve got my herbs going, although it’s been so dreary these last few days I’m worried those poor little seeds aren’t getting the nourishment they need in what I believe to be these very crucial days. (It’s probably not such a huge deal, but I’m very worried. I’m also concerned because one or two of my parsley starter pots may have been on the receiving end of a Peanut paw. Apparently the starter pots were barriers to looking out the window that she didn’t acknowledge. Poor parsley.)
I’m definitely going to grow tomatoes, and probably two types: big and little.
I don’t know the technical varieties, but I’ll find them. Maybe in another month or so it will finally be warm enough to make a trip to Prairie Gardens. Fingers crossed!
